    Dear linguist-type people,

why is "I haven't" much more common that "I've not"?

    travel
Tomorrow I'm off to the US for three weeks. I'll be in Berkeley for a few days to visit Matt (and other people too), and then three days in Portland for Mathcamp, then Bellingham, WA for a philosophy conference, and then Vegas for the weekend to visit my parents, and then we're going to LA so I can do some administrative stuff at USC and we'll see some concerts and shows and things, and then back to Berkeley for a day or two before coming back down to Australia. So it'll be quite a whirlwind, even though I'm staying within a single time zone, and will be gone from here in three weeks. (For comparison, the professor I'm working with is going in that same time frame to Beijing, Paris, Zurich, Konstanz, and Seoul.)

Anyway, I had some of the visiting American students over on Wednesday night for a dinner party, which was fun. We made cookies too. Everyone's leaving Canberra within the next two weeks, but I'll see one of them in Bellingham anyway. The only unfortunate thing is that when I was cleaning up the next day, the sink got clogged, which caused the dishwasher to overflow. However, the plumber just came by and fixed that, so fortunately everything will be able to be clean when I leave.

Also, those suggestions people made for keeping my fridge un-frozen must have been helpful - I didn't try any of them, but it still hasn't frozen up yet. I really don't understand what could be going on with it. Maybe now it realizes what I mean when I set it on the warmest setting.

Anyway, now I'm off to campus for some meetings with people to discuss various papers we've been reading before I head out.

    Britain's Missing Top Model
Top Model for girls with disabilities, video at youtube )

I'm not sure what I think about it... they're all beautiful and amazing (and inspiring for sure) girls, and while I'm sure some could be good at specific things, I find it hard that any high fashion or commercial agents would hire any of them in the same way they'd hire a non-disabled girl. I mean, the entire industry is based on what is physically considered perfect. It's not exactly the type of industry where hard work is all that's needed to get ahead...

    Similarities

So after 10 Cycles and a million pictures I've noticed some similarities between some girls pictures.  I put them together.  What do you think?

Faith in Nature Rosemary shampoo/conditioner. Yay or nay?
I recently ran out of my stock of my usual shampoo, the Aubrey Green Tea shampoo and cream rinse, so I've been switching between the small handful my local health food shop sells. I tried Weleda, the Lemon Balm and Orange Blossom shampoo and conditioner, but I found it either left my hair oily (it's usual state when unwashed), or completely dried it out - there was no in-between, no matter how much or how little conditioner I used. So I'm switching again, this time to Faith in Nature's Rosemary shampoo and conditioner. I'm hoping you guys can do an ingredients check for me, I'm a little out of touch with these things. )

Band-Aids come, most frequently, in "assorted" boxes, which have some of each size.

I always find that I use the larger ones first. I have a box that has 10 each of 7/8 inch by 7/8 inch, 5/8 inch by 2 1/4 inch, and 3/4 inch by 3 inch. I have used all of the largest size and, I think, none of the smaller sizes. (This may be psychological; even if I have an injury that one of the smaller ones would cover, I don't want to take the chance.)

This is why I bought a new box that contains only that largest size.

How many Band-Aids get wasted because they come in assortments that don't have the right distribution? (One could ask similar questions about lots of other things that come in assortments, but I'm blanking right now. I generally don't buy things that come in assortments if I can help it, for exactly this reason.)

    Dexter
Book #23: Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
Some quick and easy reading on the plane. This seems to be one of those rare cases where the flim adaptation managed to improve on the original. I'm sure the psychology of the titular character is mostly bullshit in both versions, but the TV series at least manages to mostly do without cheap crutches like Dexter just "knowing" what the killer will do because of his submerged childhood memories. The plot certainly benefited a lot from being expanded to fill a whole series: the initial false suspect made more sense (in the book it's simply a false confession with no explanation given), characters were given more depth (particularly Doakes and Laguerta) and Dexter's backstory is much better laid out.

Can anyone recommend an online version of the image below for coffee cup handles, pitchers, vessel shapes, bowls, whatever. I remember seeing some in my undergrad studio and I know you can buy them from some clay supply places.. but I prefer free online resources.

Hong Kong is exploding with tourists right now. Backpacks are on, maps are out. This should be a nuisance but it's a pleasure: I live near a tourist hotel so I see people sallying forth, maybe going out into the city for the first time. At their agog expressions I want to shout, "I KNOW THAT FEELING! And by the way, where are you from 'cause damn, that's an inscrutable ethnicity you're workin' with."

    I love HK.

Pegatina, I have penned you an ode.

I long to sip from hersluitbare strip,
and drink sticky Tab from her shoe.
Selbstklebend zum will slip from her lips
as leichten Verschluß will I do.

    Long hair in wigs
    Hello!
Anyone here has ever used a wig? I'd love to know the best way to part the hair in a wig cap, to make it reliable to keep a wig in place.
    Thank you!

    Pictures of my hair!
This is the first time I've made pictures of my hair specifically, and I intend to keep doing it every month of so to see what different products do to my hair and just to record progress. And since I know some of you like looking at other people's hair (I know I do!), here are the pictures! The first one is not great quality, but it shows length. The second shows the texture of my hair.

    4 sweater vests!
Rolled into my hotel at 5am (was supposed to be here about 1am, but whatever.... if you're going to get stuck on a plane, getting stuck on a JetBlue plane is the way to go.)

Seattle is all Seattle-y, from what I can tell. I wonder if there's something wrong with my computer, because even hooked up via ethernet I'm getting bad network utilization numbers.

I think I'll go to the SF museum on Sunday, and walk around the bay. They're trying to get me to go on a hike, but it's been 9 years since I was in Seattle and I don't think they'd get me back in time for my plane. Though I'll probably be delayed on that one, too.

The exam-creating festivities start in an hour. Wheeeeee. Whee.

How do I use foam ear protectors? plus getting those bits on my temples
I am going to do a cassia/henna gloss in a couple of hours (50g cassia and 1/2 tsp rhubarb root currently sitting in chamomile/marigold decoction, plus 1 tsp henna which will be added along with the conditioner just before application). I have just bought a bag of foam ear protectors off eBay. They turn out to be round pieces of foam, 3" or so in diameter and a fetching shade of aqua. Does anyone have any clue how to use them?

Also, I always have trouble getting mixtures to stick to the hair on my temples due to the shape of my hairline, and since my hair is fairer there it's very noticeable whaen I miss it. Any tips? Coat my face in barrier ointment and then spread the cassia gloss around lavishly, so that part of my forehead is cassiaed and cling-filmed and it can't escape?

Robert Novak is an incredible asshole
Not that does anything but continue to confirm what we already knew (this is the fellow with such despicably shameless behavior that he nearly always makes Jon Stewart's list of "Douchebags of Liberty"), but it's always nice for us libruls to have more concrete examples for our righteous condemnation. Apparently Novak has always wanted to be a racecar driver. He's had to make do with being a wingnut Washington columnist who drives his black Corvette around while screaming at pedestrians. Well now, the man who chose to out Valerie Plame's identity has gone and run over a 66 year old man, after which he tried to flee the scene in his Corvette (and was stopped when blockaded by a passing good samaritan cyclist). Yeah, the sunken-eyed, puppy-juice-drinking, evil rich old white dude brand is not doing so well anymore.

Incredible pictures of a leopard hunting and killing a crocodile, something no-one has ever seen before. It actually jumped on it in the water and dragged it out of the river before the first picture was taken. Rawr.

    Victorian hair weaving?
I am not sure if this is "on topic", but I thought maybe some of you may know about this since most have a wonderful sense of hair. I was wondering if anyone knew how to do Victorian style hair weaving or could point me in the right direction. I tried google, but I don't know if I am wording it wrong or what. I get links that are selling old Victorian hair jewelry and more, but not really a how to. I figure instead of clogging my drains with my hair I could try to do something with it. Thanks.

Putting the Mean back in Mean Value Theorem
Hmm, I can't think of another recent case of such a direct instance of the Mean Value Theorem being applied so visibly.

I know photo radar really does the same thing. However, because the time points in photo radar are so much closer, in the popular mind it's measuring instantaneous velocity rather than computing an average. It's all the same, really, but I expect with the "average speed" cameras people will feel the victims of oppressive mathematics rather than believe they were fairly caught out.

I wonder what the response would be if a believer in constructivist mathematics responded to an automated speeding ticket with a demand for a witness?
